The Tenth Power

Image
The Tenth Power by Kate Constable My rating: 3 of 5 stars The audiobook version of The Tenth Power was the best of the trilogy. There were not any obtrusively obnoxious sound effects, and I think it had the best narrator. (Side note: really frustrating that each book in the trilogy had a different narrator for the audio versions...) I do not think the story lived up to The Waterless Sea . There were too many things I had issues with (view spoiler) [(confusingly weird and unnecessary hate-love making out with Samis; a random extraterrestrial origin story for the Ancient Ones; Calwyn not adequately developing past being an insufferable jerk without her powers before she gets them all back and becomes the overpowered savior again) (hide spoiler) ] but I liked the ending, and I loved the development of Keela. ❧ View all my Goodreads reviews.

Vassa in the Night

Image
Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter My rating: 4 of 5 stars I loved reading an adaptation of a Slavic, Eastern European folktale rather than the standard Hans Christian Andersen or Brothers Grimm fare. This gave me plenty of Wikipedia binge fodder and additional items for my want-to-read list, and I always appreciate books that do that. Overall, I am not always into modern takes on mythology and folklore, but I think this was done fairly well. It helps that I am not too familiar with the source material, so this was my first real immersion in the Vassilissa tale. I think all the reviews talking about how weird this is are amusing. As a fan of weird things and dark fairytales, I think Vassa in the Night is “Vanilla Weird” at best. ❧ View all my Goodreads reviews.

The Singer of All Songs

Image
The Singer of All Songs by Kate Constable My rating: 3 of 5 stars I loved the writing. I was okay with the story. But the sound effects of the audiobook were obnoxious. ❧ View all my Goodreads reviews.

Lord of the Flies

Image
Lord of the Flies by William Golding My rating: 4 of 5 stars "The theme is an attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature. The moral is that the shape of a society must depend on the ethical nature of the individual and not on any political system however apparently logical or respectable. – William Golding This quote and this book sum up the entirety of my misanthropic views on governmental systems and sociopolitical issues in general. It is a parable that is difficult for me to read because it matches my own pessimistic outlook so precisely. It is a book I love and hate in equal measure. ❧ View all my Goodreads reviews.
