The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager My rating: 4 of 5 stars I struggled to decide between three stars or four... I settled on four because I admire and appreciate the author's clear enthusiasm about the topic and his dedication to thorough, recorded research. I suppose what frustrated me as a reader is the (understandably) speculative nature of turning a historical event like this into a digestible book. I do not know why it should bother me so much more in a book than it does in a film, but all the "probablies," "might haves," etc. on a printed page truly illustrate how much assumption and embellishment are being added to limited known facts. I accept that this is just the inherent nature of the historical genre, but I cannot get past being bothered as a reader. I feel like biases inevitably turn history into fictional nonfiction. ❧ View all my Goodreads reviews.
